Musings . . . and other stuff from your webscribe, Beth Horton
December, 2011:  Hard to believe another year has rolled on!  The Renegades have again changed meeting places.  Jill Baker-Lesperance,  owner of The Dunwoody Bakery, at 2492 Mt. Vernon Road, Dunwoody, GA 30338, has welcomed us!   As much as we loved La Madeleine, the weather got a bit too chilly for us to meet at the patio tables, and the tables inside offered too much chatter!  Do join us for our meetings at this new venue -- and indulge yourselfves in some scrumptious  delectables!  www.dunwoodybakery.com

The Blue Ridge Writers have announced their 2012 Conference Schedule:  see www.blueridgewritersconference.com -- for March 30-31.  Manuscripts may be submitted for critiques by February 28.  Categories are adult fiction, non-fiction, poetry and children's literature.

April, 2011:  The Renegades, Circle members for whom two Fridays a month are not enough, meet on the Fridays skipped by the regular first&third Friday schedule on the campus.  Our experience at Barnes and Noble was less than perfect, through no fault at all of the store, which just did not have suitable facilities for us.  We are now meeting at  La Madeleine Perimeter in the back room, 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm, with several of us getting into the habit of ariving early for lunch first.  (The food is divine!)  The address is
1165 Perimeter Center West, Ste 330,  Atlanta GA, 30346  > 770-392-0516      The website is http://www.lamadeleine.com/

April brings National Poetry Month and the Fifth Annual Visual Voices Exhibit at the GPC Library third floor Gallery!  Do check it out during the month!

Another exhibit in observation of National Poetry Month is underway at Dunwoody Public Library, 5339 Chamblee-Dunwoody Road, Dunwoody, GA 30338 --  770/512-4640.  All month,  The Color of Haiku Exhibition will feature Original Haiku and Mixed Media Paintings by Gelia Dolcimascolo, Marianne Patty and Aviva Stern     threeartists@yahoo.com

************

November, 2010:  After several wonderful years of Renegade Friday meetings at Borders, we will be saying farewell and godspeed to them at the end of 2010.  The store is closing.  We have tentative plans to move the alternate Friday meetings to Barnes & Noble Bookstore, 120 Perimeter Center West -- amost literally around the corner.  We will have a meeting room, and the store has a Starbucks and a wonderful selection of writing books and magazines.  More when arrangements are finalized!

October, 2010:  We're growing!  Our first spurt was the addition of our informal "other Fridays" at Borders  at which many of us have become regulars now -- and now, Louise McKinney, Assistant Professor of English at GPC Dunwoody and author of New Orleans: A Cultural History,  two books of poetry, The Longest Distance Between Two Places and Living Things (a book of verse for children), is establishing a "wordshop" for those interested in writing for children!  The group will meet one Wednesday a month (see our Calendar).  Louise can be emailed at Louise.McKinney@gpc.edu.  The first meeting is Wednesday, November 17, 2010, 7:00-9:00 p.m. at GPC-Dunwoody LRC 3100.

Jim Huskins is launching his new Groovy Mystery Capers website on October 29, so be sure to check it out!  http://www.jameshuskins.com  The first Groovy Mystery Caper, Silent Scream. is ready to go, and he is hard at work finishing up the second!  Way to go, Jim!

The New Year will be here before you know it.  And right after that, April 2011 will bring National Poetry Month, which the Writer's Circle will celebrate with the  FIFTH Anniversary of our gallery exhibit!  Put your thinking cap on and report ideas for this special occurrence to Gelia, our Facilitator.  Let's make it the BEST YET!

August, 2010: More than 100 youngsters ages 12 to 17 participated in the two-day Atlanta Writers Club Youth Creative Writing Camp. The camp was co-sponsored by the Writers Institute at Georgia Perimeter College, and held at GPC Clarkston Campus.

April, 2010:  Serena Tome alerts us to a Call for Submissions (of poetry) from Calliope Nerve. They are at calliopenerve.blogspot.com (see the submission guidelines.) Also, Leaf Garden Press publishes in hard copy and online. Both publications publish chapbooks as well (Alex) and Leaf nominates for the Pushcart Prize.  They also take fiction and art. FYI. {Serena M. Tome]

May, 2009:  Georgia Perimeter is going on its Summer Schedule, which means the campus will be closed Fridays.  All meetings of the Writers Circle, regular and informal, will be held at Borders Book Store, Ashford-Dunwoody Road just north of Perimeter Mall in the WalMart Shopping Center.  Same time -- 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm.  Look for us in the Cafe area!

April, 2009: NATIONAL POETRY MONTH was a spectacular success!

Gelia Dolcimascolo, Marianne Patty and Aviva Stern presented presented Disappearing Edges, a month-long exhibition of original poetry, mixed media painting and sculpture at the Dunwoody Public Library, 5339 Chamblee-Dunwoody Road, Dunwoody,  GA 30338, as part of the April 2009 National Poetry Month observances.  threeartists@yahoo.com

The Taste of Poetry Exhibition, held during the month of April, at the Georgia Perimeter Dunwoody Campus Library, Third Floor Gallery, began with a reading by the poets of their displayed poems, and this fourth annual exhibition was the largest display yet.
Nancy McDaniel and Gelia Dolcimascolo coordinated the event.

February, 2008.  Great to have Jaya Kamlani back after her two-months in India, researching for her new book!

December, 2007.  Many Writers' Circle members have enjoyed  hearing excerpts from Jaya Kamlani's fascinating memoir of growing up in India during the fall of the British Raj and how she came to America,  She has completed her manuscript and is now in the marketing stage!   She is now in India on a field trip  through the villages of northern and southern India to gather material for her next book on rural India.  She will be traveling with some people from the U.S.  and while there, will also spend time with her family and relatives.

Check out out Mary Frances' fabulous new website of her
art and poetry, at         http://artintheclouds.net!
Mary has also become a Reporter for Senior News and is looking for opportunities to interview and photgraph seniors who are having fun!  Notify her of opportunities, please!

October, 2007 -- Thanks to Gelia for the alert that on Saturday, October 27, Writer's Digest "Breakout Author of the Year" and syndicated Creative Loafing columnist Hollis Gillespie will present her helpful and hilarious Shocking Real-Life Memoir Writing Seminar, exclusively for The Atlanta Writers Club.

In this seminar about writing and selling nonfiction, you will learn: - Which genre/form best suits your idea (Memoir? Novel? Self-help? Magazine article?)
- How to pick an effective title.
- When it's permissible to embroider, improvise, and reorder real-life events.
- How to kick writer's block.
- How to begin.
- How to describe your book in one sellable paragraph.
- How and when to contact agents.

What makes the Shocking Real-Life Writing Academy unique? Hollis' goal is to guide you to not only write but to publish your work, and each class is concluded by providing you with specific tools to accomplish publication, such as concise literary-agent, publisher and national magazine-editor contact information, plus proven advice for how to pitch your book or article ideas so that it separates your work from the rest in the slush pile and will get you a quick response. In the past few months alone, three Shocking Real-Lifers have procured book deals, and three others are negotiating representation with literary agents, and all with little to no publishing experience.
